1 Coachella 12.&19.Apr.2014

Coachella 2014 Weekend 1: It’s Officially Festival Season – Showbams

Temples // Mojave // Saturday 2:40-3:25PM

The crowd gathered early inside the Mojave Tent to see one of the more buzzed about bands of the weekend, an English Psychedelic rock band simply called, Temples. Fresh off their debut release, Sun Structures, they delivered 45 minutes of psychedelic bliss, drawing tracks mostly off their new album with the exception of a b-side called “Ankh”, which was one of the many highlights of the set. The song is driven by the powerful bassline from Thomas Warmsley and the guitar slaying of James Bagshaw. The song had some serious legs that found the band soaring over the crowd in a psychedelic haze, a plateau they hopefully reach every show. The one-two punch of their singles “Keep in the Dark” and “Mesmerize” had the hot and sweaty crowd in an absolute frenzy. -PM

Temples

A breeze pushed through the crowd at the Mojave tent as four shaggy-haired, beautiful young gentleman created a golden, paisley groove on their instruments. As England’s newest psych-rock export, Temples doesn’t look like they belong in this generation. Music is a time machine alone, but Temples looked simultaneously transplanted and transcendent. Considered one of the best bands to come out of England by two of the country’s most veteran songwriters, Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher.

Their talent as musicians shone through. Even though psych-rockers tend to have a lot of visual to help the audience along on their spacey journey, Temples get it simple with minimal equipment, minimal visuals (other than frontman James Edward Bagshaw’s glittery red shirt and exotic necklace shimmery next to his magenta glittery guitar). During “Keep In The Dark,” the asked the audience to clap along if they knew the words; they sang instead. It was a full-on love in, but not the twisted, funky hippie kind. Something a lot more refined and spiritual. So spiritual that while Temples closed with their most recent single “Shelter Song,” the audience leaned in closer to their musical gurus rather than disperse for the next band. They were sheltered in the embrace of a lush vibration that permeated through the metal barricades and into our body.

Little was known about Temples weeks before Coachella 2014 debuted its first weekend but the band’s popularity grew even by the second weekend when the lead singer announced that the tent doubled in occupants. Even in the earlier hours of the day the band was successfully able to garner an impressive crowd. Temples blasted through songs off their debut album Sun Structures in a tight, tuned and professional manner. There was no Foxygen-style show but the music spoke for itself.
